How to switch Google accounts in Docs, Sheets and Drive

Signed in to both a work and a personal Google account? New files keep landing in the wrong Drive. Here is why, and four ways to fix it.

Why Google opens the wrong account

Google treats the first account you signed in with as the default (/u/0 in the address). Links like docs.new, and most bookmarks, always open in that default account, no matter which one you used last.

Four ways to switch

1. The account menu

In Docs, Sheets or Drive, click your profile picture in the top right and choose another account. It reopens the home page in that account, so you need to create the file again.

2. Change the number in the address

Every Google address contains /u/0/, /u/1/… — the number is the account. Replace /u/0/ with /u/1/ to open the same page in your second account.

3. Change your default account

Sign out of all Google accounts, then sign in to the one you want as default first, and add the others after it. The first one becomes /u/0.

4. Pick the account on every click (fastest)

In Google Slides New, open settings and click “Sync Google accounts”. From then on, clicking Docs, Sheets or any other app asks which account to use, and remembers your last choice.

FAQ

How do I change my default Google account?
Sign out of every Google account, sign in to the one you want as default first, then add the rest. Google makes the first account you sign in with the default.
Is this the same as Chrome profiles?
No. Chrome profiles are separate browser windows with their own bookmarks and extensions. These methods switch between Google accounts signed in inside one profile.
Does the extension see my password?
No. It only reads the list of accounts you are already signed in to (name, email, photo) and keeps it on your device.
